New Off-road Trailer build, a work in progress.

In 2019, I received a trailer that was once owned by my great-grandfather and grandfather. This trailer was a homemade welding trailer to take around town for welding jobs. Once I received this trailer, I felt the urge to make it into an off-road trailer to use on the weekends. This idea started and I’ve been obsessed with completing this project for a while.

What is an off-road trailer?

Over the last couple years, the overland community has been experimenting with off-road trailers (AKA teardrops, square drops). These trailers are small, easy to tow trailers that may sleep 2-3 people. There are many different styles and looks. One company that I was looking at for ideas is Hiker Trailers. These trailers is close to the design I am looking for in an off-road trailer. While, my building skills aren’t at the same level, I enjoy the challenge and being able to learn something new.

Where did I start and where am I now.

Once my off-road trailer was stripped of all the old parts, I needed to get measurements and find the center of balance for mounting the axles. Here are the axles I got (Click Here). They are heavy duty 3500lb axles, I know that this trailer will not be 3500lbs. I want to get an axle that had thicker metal tubes. This will help when the axle takes hits from rocks while off-road. I welded the leaf spring brackets on and found some Jeep tires online.

Next step, after the axle, was to grind the old paint and rust off the frame. See the video below for the current walk-around.
